Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. The Public Health Preparedness office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for readiness against bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs in Environmental Health focus on the connection between human health and the surrounding physical environment, including the ecosystem of plants and animals. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools.** Land Development Programs encompass: Mortgage Surveys; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH (Family Planning): Offers Family Planning services that include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers for community presentations can be requested. Applications for temporary Medicaid cards for prenatal care are also accessible. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department, often at little or no cost for parents unable to pay. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your doctor keep track of immunizations, ensuring you receive only necessary vaccines when due. Always bring your immunization records to appointments. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is the supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, offering: Monthly healthy food packages redeemable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, information about community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, as well as recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women; Breastfeeding women up to one year postpartum; non-nursing women up to 6 months postpartum; infants up to one year; and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women.
