Head Start is a nationwide preschool initiative aimed at children from families that meet income eligibility requirements. Local nonprofit organizations operate Head Start centers across the country, accepting applications for children aged 0 to 5 years. Families must have incomes below poverty thresholds, and the program also accommodates children with special needs or those considered at high risk. A limited number of over-income children with special needs may be accepted. The program offers assistance with medical, dental, educational, and social service needs at no cost. Required documentation includes proof of income, the child's birth date, and immunization records. Head Start provides various supportive services such as social services, parent involvement, nutrition, mental health, health education, disability support, dental care, and transportation. The program aims to enrich the lives of children, families, staff, and the community, helping families navigate life's challenges through quality education and family-centered services. It serves children aged 0-5 from low-income families with a five-day-a-week program lasting 12 hours, during which four meals are provided daily. Parents are encouraged to volunteer, and positive parenting classes are offered to assist families in educational areas. Transportation is available, and services are primarily conducted in English.
