The Child Nutrition Programs oversees the distribution of cash assistance and food commodities through schools to guarantee that children are properly nourished in public and private schools, juvenile detention facilities, preschools, and child and adult care centers and homes. The meals served adhere to the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005, which recommend healthy food choices to promote well-being and prevent illness by increasing the consumption of fruits, vegetables, and grains while reducing fat, salt, and sugar intake.
