Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare along with other state and local organizations. Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements, offering diverse services that differ by district, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. Environmental Health initiatives tackle the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. These programs encompass areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (including Animal Bites and Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (covering Permits, Plan Reviews, and Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (like Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste management. Land Development programs focus on Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water management, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage evaluations and permits. Family Planning services offer education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (which include cancer and STD screenings), and various birth control methods. Educational resources and speakers are available for community outreach. Immunizations for children are provided at health department clinics, often at low or no cost for those who cannot afford them, along with overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunization history for individuals and families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program supplies healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, and individual counseling with registered dietitians to pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women’s Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for uninsured women who meet certain income criteria and age requirements.
