Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local agencies. Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local requirements by offering a diverse range of services, which may differ between districts. Services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems, covering areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste. Land Development programs focus on Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be requested for community outreach. IMMUNIZATIONS are provided through local health departments, offering routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or special off-site events, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay. Travel vaccinations are available by appointment, and adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for individuals and families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, individual counseling with dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program, funded federally, offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women lacking insurance coverage for these services, meeting income guidelines, and falling into specific age categories or health conditions.
