Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local organizations. Each district has an independently appointed board of health by county commissioners and is not part of any state agency. They address local requirements by providing diverse services, which can differ by district, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits, indoor air quality (radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development initiatives include regulations on critical materials, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations and permits. The Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. Various birth control methods are available, and educational resources can be provided for community events. Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or special off-site events, often at low or no cost for families in need. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should check with their local health department for necessary vaccines. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals and their healthcare providers track vaccination history and ensure timely immunizations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides supplemental nutrition support with monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education, community referrals, and individual counseling with registered dietitians. WIC serves pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance coverage for these services, meet income criteria, and fall into specific age groups or health conditions.
