Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, along with various state and local organizations. Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local health requirements, offering diverse services that differ by district, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food, and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (including radon), lead health, methamphetamine lab issues, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs involve critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater management, public water systems, Rathdrum aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventories, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with a variety of birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. Immunization services are offered through local health departments, providing routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or special off-site events, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track vaccination history for individuals and their healthcare providers. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, and referrals for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program, funded federally, offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance coverage for these tests.
