Idaho operates seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and other local and state organizations. Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and functions independently of state agencies. The services provided can differ significantly from one district to another, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, often through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and other public health entities to create a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the environment, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology, food establishments, indoor air quality, lead health, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development initiatives include regulations on critical materials, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision review, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Immunization clinics provide routine childhood vaccinations, often at low or no cost, and adult vaccines may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free service that helps track vaccination history. The WIC program supports women, infants, and children with healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, and counseling. The Women’s Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance coverage for these services.
