Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements by providing diverse services that may differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, with many offered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **These programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs encompass: Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Plan Reviews, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (cancer screening, sexually transmitted disease screening, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational materials can be requested. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health districts administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health district or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents who cannot pay. Travel immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health district for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your doctor track your immunizations and ensure you receive necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that offers: Monthly healthy food packages redeemable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, information on community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials.
