Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They address local requirements by offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another. Available services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the connections between human health, the physical environment, and local ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs include: Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Plan Reviews, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, sexually transmitted disease screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources can be requested. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health districts administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health district or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health district to determine which vaccines are necessary for travel destinations. Those receiving vaccines from the health district must pay for them. Adult vaccines such as tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you, your family, and your doctor keep track of your immunizations and ensures you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, providing: Healthy foods each month that can be purchased with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, information on community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women; Breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum); Infants up to one year old; and Children under five years old.
