Each district features a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local requirements by offering a diverse range of services that differ by district. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs in Environmental Health address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **These programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Plan Reviews, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services that include education, counseling, pregnancy tests, comprehensive physical exams (covering cancer screening, sexually transmitted disease screening, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational materials can be requested. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health districts provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health district or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents in need. Overseas immunizations can be scheduled by appointment. Contact your local health district for specific vaccine requirements for travel destinations. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health district will need to cover the cost of the vaccine. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines may also be accessible. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you, your family, and your doctor keep track of immunizations and ensure you receive only the necessary vaccines when required. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that offers: Healthy foods monthly that can be bought with WIC vouchers, health screenings, health and nutrition classes, information about community programs, and referrals to healthcare providers. Individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding information and support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials are also provided. WIC serves: Pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five years old.
