Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, as well as other state and local entities. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. These districts cater to local demands, providing diverse services that may differ across regions, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many services are facilitated through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and other health districts to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (including radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs include mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater management, public water systems, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services provide education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Immunization services include routine childhood vaccinations offered at health district clinics, low-cost or free for those unable to pay, as well as overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be available. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials.
