DISTRICT OFFICE: The seven health districts in Idaho work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare as well as various state and local agencies. Each district operates independently and has a board of health appointed by county commissioners. Services offered can differ by district and include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and other public health districts to create a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs in this area address the intersection of human health with the physical environment, including Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), and Public Pools. Land Development Programs cover Mortgage Surveys, Public Water Systems, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH (Family Planning): Offers Family Planning services, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals. Various birth control methods are available, along with educational resources for community presentations. Temporary Medicaid applications for prenatal care can also be obtained. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations at low or no cost for those unable to pay. Appointments can be scheduled by calling the local health department, which will bill insurance. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that keeps track of immunization records. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative providing healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, and referrals to healthcare providers. It serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance that covers these tests.
