Idaho consists of seven health districts that closely collaborate with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. Services offered may differ by district and include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness office partners with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and other public health districts to develop a unified state plan for responding to bioterrorism and public health emergencies. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This program addresses the interactions between human health and the physical environment, including issues related to plants and animals. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools.** Land Development Programs include: Mortgage Surveys; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH (Family Planning): Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. Various birth control methods are available, along with educational materials and speakers for community events. Applications for temporary Medicaid cards for prenatal care can also be obtained. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics, often at little to no cost for families unable to pay. To schedule an appointment, contact the local health department, which will bill your insurance. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that keeps track of immunization records for you and your family, ensuring you receive necessary vaccines. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC provides supplemental nutrition for Women, Infants, and Children, offering monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, and referrals to healthcare providers. It serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women up to one year postpartum, non-nursing women up to six months postpartum, infants under one year, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK is a federally funded initiative providing free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance coverage for these tests.
