Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, as well as various state and local organizations. Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. The services offered can differ by district, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems, covering areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Waterborne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste. Land Development programs include Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with a variety of birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community presentations upon request. Local health departments also offer routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, with low or no cost for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should consult their local health department for necessary vaccines. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be accessible. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals track their vaccination history. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance covering these tests, based on income guidelines and age criteria.
