Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local requirements, offering diverse services that differ by district, including community health nursing, environmental health, health promotion, preparedness, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs in Environmental Health address the connections between human health, the physical environment, and local ecosystems. **These programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational resources and speakers for community events. Emergency contraception is also provided. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for families unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to determine which vaccines are required for travel. Adult vaccines like tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive necessary vaccines on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that provides healthy foods each month through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack insurance for these services, meet income criteria, and fall into specific age groups.
