Each district has its own board of health, appointed by county commissioners, and operates independently from state agencies. They address local demands by offering diverse services that may differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, environmental health, health promotion, preparedness, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs related to Environmental Health focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs consist of: Day Care; Epidemiology (Food and Waterborne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs encompass: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational materials and speakers for community events upon request. Emergency contraception is also provided. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations at clinics held at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. Vaccinations for children are offered at low or no cost for families unable to pay. Travel immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers must pay for the vaccines. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals track vaccinations and ensure they receive necessary immunizations on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative for Women, Infants, and Children, providing monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, counseling from registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational resources. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five years. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK is a federally funded program offering free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance for these tests, meet income requirements, and fall into specific age categories.
