Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of any state agency. They address local requirements by offering a variety of services that can differ from one district to another, including community health nursing, environmental health, health promotion, preparedness, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy to prepare for and respond to bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This includes programs that address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs encompass: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, and educational resources can be provided for community presentations upon request. Emergency contraception is also accessible. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are available at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations can be scheduled by appointment. Contact your local health department to determine the specific vaccines required for travel destinations. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your doctor keep track of immunizations. It ensures that you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program providing healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition education, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five years. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. It targets women without insurance covering mammograms or pap tests, who meet income criteria, and are either aged 50-64, aged 30-49 with symptoms of breast or cervical cancer, or aged 65 and older without Medicare or Medicare part B.
