Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local needs by offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, environmental health, health promotion, preparedness, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs in this area address the connections between human health and the physical environment, as well as the communities of plants and animals. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers Family Planning assistance, which encompasses education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. Various birth control methods are available, along with educational resources and speakers for community events upon request. Emergency contraception is also accessible. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at health departments or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents unable to pay. Overseas immunizations can be scheduled by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines like tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps individuals and their healthcare providers keep track of immunizations and ensure timely vaccinations. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program that provides healthy foods each month through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information about community resources, and referrals to healthcare providers. It serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five years. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded initiative offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women.
