Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and functions independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements, providing diverse services that can differ from one district to another. Services include community health nursing, environmental health, health promotion, preparedness, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs in Environmental Health focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **These programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, and educational resources can be provided for community presentations upon request. Emergency contraception is also accessible. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or special off-site events. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact the local health department to determine necessary vaccines for their destination. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your healthcare provider keep track of your immunizations. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program providing healthy foods monthly through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC is available to pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year of age, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance coverage for these services, meet income criteria, and fall into specific age categories.
