Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local entities. Each district operates independently, responding to community-specific needs with a diverse range of services, which may differ from one district to another. Environmental Health programs tackle issues at the intersection of human health and the physical environment, covering areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (including animal bites and food and waterborne illnesses), Food Establishments (permitting, plan reviews, inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste. Land Development programs address Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage (including site evaluations, permits, and inspections). Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, offering various birth control methods. Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, with low or no costs for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations require appointments, and travelers should contact their local health department for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis A and B, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals track their immunizations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, and individual counseling with registered dietitians, serving pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance coverage for these tests, meeting specific income guidelines and age criteria.
