Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, along with several state and local organizations. Each district operates independently and is guided by a board of health appointed by county commissioners. The services offered can differ significantly between districts, addressing local health needs. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided under contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and other public health entities to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and public health emergencies. Environmental Health initiatives focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (including radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs encompass regulations for critical materials, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community outreach. Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or special off-site events, often at little to no cost for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should consult local health departments for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that tracks immunizations for individuals and their healthcare providers. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education, and referrals to healthcare providers, serving pregnant women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance covering these tests, based on specific age and income criteria.
