Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare along with several state and local organizations. Each district has a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They address local health needs by offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and public health emergencies. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems, covering areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste management. Land Development programs include regulations on Critical Materials, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage evaluations. FAMILY PLANNING services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be requested for community presentations. Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay, and overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track vaccination history. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, individual counseling with dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program, funded federally, offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women without insurance coverage for these tests, based on specific age and income criteria.
