DISTRICT OFFICE: Idaho's seven health districts collaborate closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local agencies. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local needs by offering a diverse range of services that may differ from one district to another. Services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. For the most current information on available services in your area, contact your nearest Health District. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems. **These programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational materials and speakers can be provided for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health districts administer routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, sometimes offering special off-site clinics. These vaccinations are provided for a nominal administration fee, and no child will be turned away for immunizations. Some districts also offer immunizations for international travel by appointment. Contact your local health district to learn about the specific vaccines required for different destinations. Adult vaccines, including tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you, your family, and your doctor track immunizations and ensure they are up to date. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children offering: monthly healthy food purchases via WIC vouchers; health screenings; nutrition classes; information about community programs; referrals to healthcare providers; individual counseling with registered dietitians; breastfeeding support; recipes, newsletters, and educational materials.
