The Medical Reserve Corps can be reached at 208-239-5208, and the Swine Flu Hotline for Region 6 is available at 208-234-5888. Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, along with other local and state agencies. Each district has a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local requirements by providing diverse services that can differ from one district to another, including community health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are offered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. For the latest updates on available services in your area, reach out to your local District Health Department. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (including radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development initiatives include regulations on critical materials, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations and permits. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with a variety of birth control methods available. Educational materials and speakers for community events can be provided upon request. Immunizations are offered by local health departments, providing routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or special off-site events, often at low or no cost for families in need. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be accessible. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals track their vaccination history. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers supplemental nutrition support, including healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, healthcare referrals, and counseling with registered dietitians. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance coverage for these tests, meeting specific income guidelines, and age criteria.
