Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and other local and state agencies. Each district operates independently and has a health board appointed by county commissioners. They address local requirements by offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another, including community health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. Environmental Health initiatives focus on the intersection of human health and the surrounding environment, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality, lead health programs, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs include critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, often at low or no cost for families in need, and overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free and confidential service that helps track immunizations for individuals and their families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers supplemental nutrition, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, and individual counseling with registered dietitians. It serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance coverage for these tests, meeting specific income criteria.
