Idaho consists of seven health districts that collaborate closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various local and state agencies. Each district has a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local needs by offering diverse services that can differ by district, including community health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, often through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and other public health entities to develop a statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology, food establishments, indoor air quality, lead health, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs include regulations on critical materials, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, aquifer protection, and sewage evaluations. Family Planning services offer education, counseling, pregnancy testing, and various birth control methods, along with community presentations. Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations, often at low or no cost, and provide overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines may also be available.
