These services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology, food establishments, indoor air quality, lead health, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs address critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision review, and subsurface sewage evaluations. The Family Planning services offered include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including screenings for cancer and sexually transmitted diseases), and referrals, with a variety of birth control methods available. Immunization services are provided through local health departments, offering routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay, as well as overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track vaccinations for individuals and families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides nutritious food, health screenings, nutrition education, and referrals to healthcare providers for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five, with services available in English and interpreters if needed.
