Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local requirements by offering a variety of services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers family planning resources, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (which encompass cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV tests), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational materials and speakers for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments conduct routine childhood vaccination clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents who cannot pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to determine which vaccines are necessary for specific travel destinations. Adults may also access vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative that provides healthy foods monthly through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational resources. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance coverage for mammograms or pap tests, meet income requirements, and fall within specific age brackets.
