Each district is overseen by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. FAMILY PLANNING: This program offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A wide range of birth control methods are available, and educational materials along with speakers can be requested for community events. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are often low cost or free for parents unable to pay. Adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered.
