Idaho consists of seven health districts that collaborate with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local entities. Each district operates independently and has a board of health appointed by county commissioners. They address local needs by providing diverse services that can differ from one district to another, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and include: Day Care Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; and Solid Waste. Land Development programs cover: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; and Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screening, STD screening, and HIV testing), and referrals, with a variety of birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be requested for community presentations. Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or special off-site events, often at low or no cost for families in need. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact the local health department for vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps track immunizations for you and your family. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides supplemental nutrition, offering healthy foods through vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education, community referrals, and support for breastfeeding. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program, funded federally, provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance coverage for these tests, based on specific age and income criteria.
