Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. These services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This encompasses programs that address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and surrounding ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs include: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives cover: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers Family Planning support, including education, counseling, pregnancy tests, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings and STD testing), and referrals. A wide range of birth control methods is available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for those who cannot afford them. Travel immunizations are available by appointment; contact your local health department for specific vaccine requirements for travel destinations. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that keeps track of your immunization history, ensuring you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC provides a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that includes: Monthly healthy food packages redeemable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual consultations with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational resources. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded initiative offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women. The program is intended for women without insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, who meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64, Age 30-49 with symptoms and no insurance, or age 65 and older without Medicare or Medicare part B.
