Public mental health services are primarily concentrated in two key areas: Community Crisis Response and support for adults with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI) or children with significant emotional challenges. COMMUNITY CRISIS RESPONSE SERVICES serve as the initial intervention for adults undergoing a mental health crisis, which may include psychiatric symptoms like self-harm or harm to others. Each welfare region in Idaho is equipped with a community health center and several satellite offices that offer 24/7 crisis response services, including hotlines, emergency in-person psychiatric assessments, treatment referrals, and consultations with law enforcement, local hospitals, and other social service entities as needed. SEVERE AND PERSISTENT MENTAL ILLNESS services are designed for individuals aged 18 and older who are affected by severe and enduring mental health issues. Eligible individuals must have a diagnosis of conditions such as schizophrenia, schizo-affective disorder, major affective disorder, delusional disorder, or borderline personality disorder. The severity of these disorders must disrupt functioning in at least two areas of life, either continuously or intermittently. SPMI services encompass screening and referral, assertive community treatment, crisis intervention, case management, psychiatric and medical services, short-term outpatient therapy, individual and group psychosocial rehabilitation, consultation and education, and community-supported employment. The Mental Health Program is overseen by the Division of Behavioral Health. Services are available in English, with interpreters accessible upon request.
