Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare along with various state and local organizations. Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of any state agency. They address local requirements by offering a diverse range of services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. Environmental Health initiatives encompass areas where human health intersects with the physical environment and the ecosystem. These programs cover Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste management. Land Development programs include Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage evaluations. Family Planning services provide education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with a variety of birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be requested for community events. Immunization services are offered for routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or special off-site locations, often at low or no cost for families in need. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for individuals and their healthcare providers. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, and individual counseling with registered dietitians. WIC caters to pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers (up to one year postpartum), infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program, funded federally, provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance for these services, meet income requirements, and fall within specific age groups.
