Idaho is served by seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, along with other local and state organizations. Each district operates independently, governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners. They cater to local requirements, offering a variety of services that differ across districts, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, often through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and other entities to create a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health crises. Environmental Health programs tackle concerns that connect human health with the environment, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (radon), lead health, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development initiatives include critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater management, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations and permits. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, offering various birth control methods. Educational materials and speakers are available for community outreach. Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, often at low or no cost for families in need, and provide overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals and their doctors track vaccination history and ensure timely immunizations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational resources for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women’s Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance covering these tests, meeting specific income guidelines, and falling within certain age categories.
