Each district has its own health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements by offering a diverse range of services that can differ from one district to another. These services encompass community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs in Environmental Health focus on the connections between human health and the physical environment, as well as the surrounding ecosystem. **These programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers Family Planning assistance, which includes education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, so please contact your local health department for specific vaccine requirements for travel destinations. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive necessary vaccines at the right times. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC provides a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, offering: monthly healthy foods redeemable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women; Breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum); Infants under one year; and Children under five years. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded initiative offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. The program is designed for women without health insurance covering mammograms or pap tests, who meet income criteria, and fall into one of these categories: Age 50-64, Age 30-49 with no insurance and symptoms indicative of breast or cervical cancer, or Age 65 and older who are not eligible for Medicare or lack Medicare part B.
