Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements by offering a diverse range of services, which can differ from one district to another. Services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing and responding to bioterrorism incidents and public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems. **Programs include: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs encompass: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings and sexually transmitted disease testing) and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational resources and speakers for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments offer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at health departments or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact the local health department to determine which vaccines are necessary for travel destinations. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that keeps track of your immunization history, ensuring you receive only the vaccines you need when required. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that provides: monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five years. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor. This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack insurance for mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into specific age groups.
