Each district features a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local demands by providing a range of services that differ from one district to another. These services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered via contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **These programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources can be requested. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are low-cost or free for parents unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to determine the specific vaccines required for each travel destination. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department will need to cover the cost of the vaccine. Adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your doctor keep track of immunizations and ensures you receive only the necessary vaccines. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is the supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, providing: Monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women; Breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum); Infants up to one year; and Children under five.
