Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local needs by offering a diverse range of services, which may differ between districts. Services can include community health nursing, home health care, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives cover areas where human health intersects with the physical environment and the ecosystem of plants and animals. **Environmental Health Programs include: Day Care Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs encompass: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services that include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. Most birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be arranged for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine vaccinations for children through clinics held at their facilities or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are typically low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Travel immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to learn which vaccines are required for specific destinations. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department will need to cover the cost of the vaccine. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your healthcare provider keep track of your immunization history and ensure you receive necessary vaccines on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: Monthly healthy food packages redeemable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling by registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year old, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women. Women's Health Check is available for women who lack health insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Ages 50-64; Ages 30-49 without a pap test in the last five years or never had one; Under age 50 with breast cancer symptoms (requires clinician approval); Age 65 or older without Medicare eligibility or lacking Medicare part B.
