Each district is governed by a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local needs by offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: The Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **Programs include: Day Care Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives cover: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers Family Planning resources, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (which include cancer screenings, sexually transmitted disease screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational materials and speakers can be provided for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for families unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment; contact your local health department to determine which vaccines are necessary for travel destinations. Adult vaccines, such as tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your healthcare provider track immunizations and ensure you receive necessary vaccines on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative for Women, Infants, and Children, offering: monthly healthy food packages redeemable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, information about community resources, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. To qualify for the Women's Health Check, women must lack insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, meet income requirements, and fall into one of the following categories: Ages 50-64; Ages 30-49 without a pap test in 5 years or longer, or never had a pap test; under 50 with symptoms indicative of breast cancer (clinician approval required); or age 65 or older without Medicare or Medicare part B coverage.
