Each district has a board of health that is appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of any state agency. They cater to local needs and offer a variety of services that can differ between districts. Services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, health care providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs in Environmental Health address the relationship between human health and the physical environment, including the community of plants and animals. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs encompass: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing) and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational materials and speakers can be arranged for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents unable to pay. Appointments are required for overseas immunizations. Contact your local health department to determine the necessary vaccines for specific travel destinations. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your doctor keep track of your immunizations and ensures you receive only the vaccines you need when necessary. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that provides healthy foods each month through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five years. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack insurance coverage for these tests, meet income criteria, and fall into specific age categories or have certain symptoms.
