Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of any state agency. They address local requirements by offering a diverse range of services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. FAMILY PLANNING: This program provides family planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, thorough physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals. A wide range of birth control methods is available, along with educational resources and speakers for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments offer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Travel immunizations are available by appointment; it’s advisable to contact the local health department to determine which vaccines are necessary for specific destinations. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your healthcare provider track immunizations and ensure you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that provides healthy foods each month through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year of age, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK program: This federally funded initiative offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. To qualify, women must lack insurance coverage for mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into specific age categories or have certain health conditions.
