Each district features a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local requirements by offering a diverse range of services, which can differ from one district to another. These services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism and other public health crises. FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV tests), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational resources for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department for specific vaccine requirements for their destinations. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps you and your doctor keep track of immunizations and ensure you receive necessary vaccines on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative providing healthy foods monthly through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack insurance covering these tests, meet income criteria, and fall into specific age groups or conditions.
