Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and functions independently of any state agency. They address local demands by offering a diverse range of services, which can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. FAMILY PLANNING: This program offers Family Planning services, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (such as cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, and educational materials and speakers can be requested for community presentations. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics held at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. For overseas immunizations, appointments are necessary. Contact your local health department to determine which vaccines are required for specific travel destinations. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you, your family, and your doctor keep track of immunizations and ensure you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative for Women, Infants, and Children, providing healthy foods monthly through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational resources. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five years of age. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into specific age groups or conditions.
