Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and functions independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements, offering diverse services that differ by district, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) partners with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services, which include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (with cancer and STD screenings, as well as HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, and educational materials can be provided for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are offered at a low cost or for free if the parent cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact the local health department to determine the necessary vaccines for their destinations. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be accessible. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive only the vaccines you need when required. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program that provides healthy foods monthly, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, and breastfeeding support. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year old, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance for these services, meet income criteria, and fall into specific age categories or have certain health conditions.
