Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local requirements by offering diverse services, which can differ by district. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing for and addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health emergencies. FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers Family Planning assistance, which includes education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. Various birth control methods are available, and educational materials and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are typically offered at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations can be scheduled by appointment. Contact your local health department to learn about the specific vaccines required for travel destinations. Adults may also have access to vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your healthcare provider track immunizations and ensure you receive necessary vaccines on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that provides healthy foods monthly through vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five years. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance coverage for these tests, meet income criteria, and fall into specific age categories or have certain health conditions.
