Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of any state agency. They address local requirements by offering diverse services that differ from one district to another, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers Family Planning assistance, which includes education, counseling, pregnancy tests, comprehensive physical examinations (featuring cancer screenings, sexually transmitted disease screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A wide range of birth control methods is available, along with educational materials and speakers for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact the local health department to determine the necessary vaccines for their destinations. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your doctor keep track of your immunizations and ensures you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative for Women, Infants, and Children, providing monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational resources. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year old, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack insurance covering mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into specific age categories.
