Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from any state agency. They address local requirements by offering a diverse range of services that can differ from one district to another. Services include community health nursing, home health care, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified state plan for preparedness and response to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. FAMILY PLANNING: This program offers services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings, as well as HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, and educational resources can be provided for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department to determine the necessary vaccines for their destination. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive only the vaccines you need when required. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC provides a supplemental nutrition program that offers monthly healthy foods through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK: This federally funded initiative provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance covering these tests, meet income requirements, and fall into specified age categories.
