Each district has a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the connection between human health and the physical environment, including flora and fauna. **These programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs encompass: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational materials upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, which may also occur at special off-site events, often at low or no cost for families in need. Overseas immunizations can be scheduled by appointment. Travelers should contact their local health department to determine necessary vaccines for their destination, and while vaccines are available for a fee, adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals and their doctors track immunizations, ensuring that only required vaccines are received when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program providing healthy foods monthly through vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials.
