Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local requirements by offering diverse services that can differ between districts, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **Environmental Health Programs include: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives cover: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This program offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings, as well as HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources can be requested. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Immunizations for overseas travel are available by appointment; contact your local health department for specific vaccine requirements for each destination. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department will need to cover the cost of the vaccine. Adult vaccines, including tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your healthcare provider keep track of your immunization history and ensure you receive necessary vaccines on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative for Women, Infants, and Children, providing: Monthly healthy food packages redeemable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, information on community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year, and children under five years of age. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. The Women's Health Check is available to women without insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, who meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 and have not had a pap test in 5 years or longer, or have never had a pap test; under age 50 with symptoms indicative of breast cancer (with clinician approval); or age 65 or older without Medicare eligibility or lacking Medicare part B. Languages available include English and Spanish, with interpreters accessible upon request.
